‘Tis the Season for Year-End Album Lists

It’s that most wonderful time of the year, when music hounds everywhere struggle to compile THE perfectly precise top-albums-of-the-year list. A list that must demonstrate their sovereignty over the ever-changing world of releases, reissues, and re-pressings; a list by which they will be judged, labeled as a guru for the year to come or sentenced to a musical hell where their opinions no longer matter. Pressure like that gives me anxiety attacks so I asked some friends of mine, Chicago music “movers and shakers” if you will, what’s been on repeat for them this 2009- minus the blurbs, in no particular order, and not necessarily new releases.

LIVE AND LOCAL: 97-Shiki: “That’s Some Beautiful Fucking Noise”

Last night at the Bottom Lounge, Jewsus, 97-Shiki, and Triclops! were forced to compete with the soaring anticipation of seeing Melt-Banana live, and due to elevated expectations I heard many disappointed patrons spouting out criticisms of these bands over puffs of rolled cigarettes. LIVE AND LOCAL: Sass Dragons: “Good Enough for Punk”

The Logan Square venue Locked Out is spotted with decapitated doll heads and wallpapered with slogans crying out for “A Better World Now” or commanding that “Boeing is Evil”, all suggesting that Locked Out functions more as a mutated community center where come-to-anarcho meetings are held rather than a music space. All politics aside, the venue is spacious and the people that live there are friendly; although no meat is allowed, they cook up approved snacks and keep the bathrooms well stocked with toilet paper. At least last Saturday night, bands were able to come together to play for a purpose agreed upon by the majority at a benefit for PAWS to “save the puppies”.
