LIVE AND LOCAL: 97-Shiki: “That’s Some Beautiful Fucking Noise”

Last night at the Bottom Lounge, Jewsus, 97-Shiki, and Triclops! were forced to compete with the soaring anticipation of seeing Melt-Banana live, and due to elevated expectations I heard many disappointed patrons spouting out criticisms of these bands over puffs of rolled cigarettes. Looking back on the night as a whole, the openers could be taken as silly-Americans-with-their-instruments compared to the full on shred! shred! shred! shred! of Melt-Banana’s exotic genius, but that doesn’t mean these bands aren’t great in their own right, and really, who else in Chicago was going to open? Who were you expecting, Steve Albini?

LIVE AND LOCAL: Sass Dragons: “Good Enough for Punk”

The Logan Square venue Locked Out is spotted with decapitated doll heads and wallpapered with slogans crying out for “A Better World Now” or commanding that “Boeing is Evil”, all suggesting that Locked Out functions more as a mutated community center where come-to-anarcho meetings are held rather than a music space. All politics aside, the venue is spacious and the people that live there are friendly; although no meat is allowed, they cook up approved snacks and keep the bathrooms well stocked with toilet paper. At least last Saturday night, bands were able to come together to play for a purpose agreed upon by the majority at a benefit for PAWS to “save the puppies”.
